| Has provided one-on-one reading assistance for children with special needs in elementary school classrooms since 1991. Our volunteers read to, or with, the children to improve and encourage their reading skills. Gift books are presented to each child twice a year to encourage reading at home. Teachers are given reference books and materials of their choice to expand their in-class libraries. |
| A program which distributes bears to fire stations, sheriff's officers and to California Highway Patrol officers to comfort children and seniors experiencing trauma or stressful situations. |
| A program geared toward early elementary school students, and introduces through puppetry, programs dealing with disabilities, cultural differences, social problems and acceptance of self and others. The program scripts are purchased from a respected national institution, and the plays are presented in an interactive theater atmosphere. |
| Provides an opportunity for middle school staff to enhance and/or develop new or different approaches to teaching, stimulate creative thought and expand curriculum. Annually, teachers, counselors and media specialists are invited to apply for an allocation amount to be used to enrich student learning. These applications are reviewed by a committee of our volunteers, and grants are funded in the fall. Requests to enhance the curriculum are varied: field trips, digital equipment, tutoring programs, special speakers, music, science, math and English aids. |
| Provides new school clothing, shoes, and personal care kits, for school children K-8 within the Capistrano Unified School District. Military families on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base are also given assistance with children's clothing needs and baby equipment. School staff members praise the service Operation School Bell provides, and confirm it raises self-esteem, improves classroom attendance and promotes learning. |
